This is where parallel optics start. 40GBASE-SR4 runs four lanes over an MPO/MTP
ribbon, so it needs 12-fibre MPO trunks rather than the duplex LC patch leads you
use at 1G and 10G. 40GBASE-LR4 multiplexes four wavelengths onto a single duplex
single-mode pair and reaches 10 km, so it keeps your existing LC plant.
Getting this wrong is the most common 40G mistake we see: an SR4 module ordered for
a site that only has duplex LC single-mode. Tell us the fibre type and we will
specify the right part.
